Home Video and Video Game Retailers
Unlike the Amusements Act, home video retail falls under the Film and Video Classification Act. The aspects of the new act that are of primary interest to home video and video game retailers in Alberta include:
- The Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association (CMPDA) is designated as the classification agency in Alberta for home video ratings.
- All home video products available to the public in Alberta must display the classification assigned by the CMPDA.
- The Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) is designated as the classification agency in Alberta for video games.
- All video game products available to the public in Alberta must display the classification assigned by the ESRB.
- Adult video film product available for purchase must be stored in a separate area:
- Not in public view; and
- To which minors are not given access.
Films and video games slated for retail sale are required to have been classified by the respective designated agencies.
NOTE: All home video and video game products are currently classified by the CMPDA and the ESRB respectively; the new legislation will not change the existing business practices of home video and video game retailers.
